Passenger Car Registration in EU up by 53% in May 2021

In May, Croatian market noted an increase of 105.2% YoY, to 4,467 cars.

In May 2021, passenger car registrations in the EU rose by 53.4% compared to last year, totaling 891,665 units. However, May’s result is still far below the 1.2m cars that were sold in May 2019 (c. -26%). When looking at the EU member states Spain witnessed the biggest increase (+177.8%). The EU’s three other key car markets also did well in May: France +46.4%, Italy +43.0% and Germany +37.2%.

When observing the development since the beginning of the year, EU demand for new cars increased by 29.5%, reach 4.3m units registered in total. The steep declines in the first two months of 2021 were offset by strong rises in March, April and May. Each of the four major markets posted double-digit percentage increases so far this year: Italy (+62.8%), France (+50.1%), Spain (+40.0%) and Germany (+12.8%).

When observing the situation in the region, Croatia posted an increase of 105.2% YoY in May, reaching 4,467 cars. In the meantime, Slovenia noted only a slight increase of 3.5%, to 5,261 cars.

If we were to look at the car registration since the beginning of the year, one can note that Croatian market noted an increase of 44% (to 19,088 cars), while the Slovenian market noted an increase of 20.5% (to 25,833 cars).
